Both Video Doorbell 2 and Video Doorbell 3 send notifications to your phone, tablet, and PC when anyone presses your doorbell or triggers the built-in motion sensors. When you answer the notification, you can see, hear, and speak to visitors from anywhere.
Regarding main differences, Video Doorbell 3 has 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band wifi (vs 2.4GHz only on Video Doorbell 2) for enhanced connectivity and an additional “near” motion zone that provides motion detection in areas only 5’-15’ in front of your home (reducing irrelevant Motion Notifications further away). Video Doorbell 3 also has improved screw strength, a redesigned easy-to-remove faceplate, and automatic chime connection which makes installing your video doorbell easier than ever.
The main difference is that Video Doorbell 3 Plus includes our Pre-Roll technology which allows you to see an additional 4 seconds of video before the motion event was even triggered – a first-to-market feature for battery-powered doorbells and unique exclusively to Ring. Pre-Roll video is in black and white and in low resolution to conserve your battery life.
Video Doorbell 3 is powered by a rechargeable, quick-release battery pack or can be hardwired to existing doorbell wiring for continuous charging. To recharge Video Doorbell 3, simply press the button on the battery pack to release it from the camera, then plug it into a micro-USB cord until fully charged. Slide the battery back into place once it’s charged, and you’re ready to protect your home.
Video Doorbell 3 is backwards compatible with Video Doorbell 2’s charging cables. Mounting brackets and wedge/corner kits are not backwards compatible but new versions will be provided in the Video Doorbell 3 box. Solar mounts are not optimized for the Video Doorbell 3 and a new version is now available for purchase.
A separate Video Doorbell 1 adapter plate accessory is available now to make the Video Doorbell 3 backwards compatible with your Video Doorbell 1 mounting holes, so new drilling is not required.

If you have a Ring subscription, motion event videos captured by your Video Doorbell will be saved to your Ring account for up to 180 days. You can manage your video storage time through the Control Centre. Photos captured will be saved to your Ring account for up to 7 days, so you can review them at any time. Without a subscription, you can view real-time video for Ring Video Doorbells and Security Cameras and answer doorbell notifications as they happen, but your videos and photos will not be saved.
